Great Waterfront Trail Adventure Tour

CAA is proud to take part, once again, in the annual Great Waterfront Trail Adventure Tour! Sign up today and join us on bike paths through quiet country roads, farmland, quaint towns, beautiful parks, wineries, fruit stands and historical sites, just to name but a few of the scenic highlights. The newly expanded route leads participants through an additional 600 kilometers and 27 communities from the Township of Lakeshore near Windsor to Fort Erie. This expansion has been added to the existing 720km/41 communities of Waterfront Trail from Niagara to the Quebec border.

As always, everyone is encouraged to join in and either camp out or stay at our hotel partners along the way. And should you run into trouble during the ride, the CAA Bike Assist team and Mobile Bike unit will be standing to help.

The Great Waterfront Trail Adventure Tour takes place between August 11-17, 2013.

Make our roadways safer for both motorists and cyclists

CAA South Central Ontario is committed to helping keep our roads safe for everyone on them. That’s why we’ve partnered with Share the Road Cycling Coalition to help give motorists and cyclists important information on how to safely share the road. Here are some tips for both motorists and cyclists to remember:

Motorists

  • Slow down when passing a cyclist and check over your shoulder before switching lanes
  • Always yield to cyclists, as they can be moving faster than you think
  • Check for cyclists before opening your car door – the fine for opening a door into a cyclist’s path is $110 and two demerit points
  • Do not make a right-hand turn in front of a cyclist – assume they are travelling straight through

Cyclists

  • Obey all traffic laws, signs and signals
  • Ride straight and stay about one metre from the curb or parked cars
  • Increase your visibility by wearing bright colours and reflective clothing, helmets and other protective gear, and using lights in low light conditions
  • Ride single file, except when passing

Bike safety habits begin early

There’s nothing like the thrill of seeing a child master riding a trike or bike for the first time. To help keep the fun in bike riding, be sure that the bike is in good working order and fits your child. Remember to use the following safety equipment (it’s also required by law):

  • Helmet: Cyclists under the age of 18 are required to wear one
  • Lights & Reflectors: A white light should be mounted at front of bike, and a red reflector light should be mounted at back
  • Bell or horn
  • Reflective Tape: Use white reflective tape on front forks, red reflective tape on rear stays

To maximize your fun:

  • Plan your route
  • Have your child practice cycling where there are few cars
  • Follow the rules of the road:
    • Remind your child to watch for cars at intersections and pulling out of driveways. Make eye contact with drivers to ensure that they see you.
    • Remember, different communities have different rules for learning to ride on sidewalks. Contact your municipality for the bylaws in your community.
