Frequently Asked Questions
"MTO-approved" means that the driver training curriculum has been approved by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. Beginner students who complete an MTO-approved driver training course are certified through the Ministry, which enables them to take their road test for their G2 licence four months earlier. Graduates may also qualify for automotive insurance premium discounts.
Effective September 2009, all beginner driver training courses offered in Ontario must be MTO approved. Schools that fail to comply with this ruling will leave students uncertified and unable to apply for an early driving test.
Beginner Drivers course Students who enrol in the Beginner Driver training course must be 16 years of age or older and must have their G1 permit before starting their in-car instruction. They do not need to provide their own vehicle.
Mature Drivers course - While this course is designed for senior drivers aged 65 and older, there is no strict age requirement per se. This workshop addresses the concerns of the mature driver.
Corporate/Fleet Training course - Participants must have a valid Ontario driver's licence and, if the chosen course includes in-car instruction, must provide their own vehicle (the vehicle they are operating for the organization is best).
To minimize all possible distractions, we recommend that students complete the in-car training alone, with only the instructor in the vehicle. If the student requires a parent's presence, the parent must complete and sign a chaperone form.
Not all driver training schools are created equal. At CAA, we encourage all prospective students and/or their parents to visit the CAA driver training school or any CAA-approved driver training schools to ensure that the facilities meet their expectations. If you have comments or concerns, please contact us with your feedback!
No, you do not have to pay for gas unless your training requires you to use your own vehicle.
When completing the online registration form, the red asterisks (*) indicate mandatory fields. Registration is only complete once you fill in all of these fields with valid information.
While you may request a female instructor, your choice is based on availability and is not always guaranteed. As of September 2009, all Ontario driving schools that provide training for a G-level license have to use a curriculum that is approved by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO).
Schools that request to use our MTO-approved CAA How to Drive curriculum to teach beginner drivers must first pass our rigorous approval process for joining the CAA Approved Driving School Network. Once these schools meet our strict criteria and join the Network, all students who graduate from their beginner courses receive a FREE CAA basic membership for 12 months.
To avoid penalty charges, students must provide a minimum of 24 hours notice for any cancellations.
All CAA driving instructors are properly certified, insured, and trained. We conduct the appropriate background checks on all instructors prior to inviting them to join our team. You can be rest assured that you are learning from some of the most capable, experienced instructors in the industry.
