Make your Vehicle Cleaner and Greener

CAA promotes proper care and maintenance of vehicles as a way to help prevent roadside emergencies. But it's also worth noting that good vehicle maintenance reduces fuel consumption and pollution. In fact, studies show that a poorly tuned engine can create up to 50 per cent more emissions than one that is running properly.

Ways to green your vehicle

Buy a fuel-efficient vehicle
In a recent analysis conducted by BCAA/Pollution Probe for Clean Air Day 2007, the Honda Civic hybrid and the Toyota Prius topped the list for fuel economy and overall emissions. Check the EnerGuide label on a new vehicle for its fuel consumption rating. As a general rule, a manual transmission is more fuel-efficient than an automatic - assuming you shift properly.
Read your owner's manual
It provides the information you need to have your vehicle running at its optimal level.
Replace the air filter
A clogged filter can increase fuel consumption by 10 per cent.
Make sure your tires are properly inflated
Just one tire under inflated by six psi can increase your fuel consumption by 3 per cent and reduce the life of the tire by 10,000 km.
Change the oil regularly
If you change the oil yourself, take the old oil to any CAA Approved Automotive Repair Facility (AARS) depot in your area. One litre of engine oil can contaminate two million litres of water.
Lift your hood once a month
Check all engine fluid levels, spark plug wires, battery terminals and radiator hoses and clamps.
