Roads and Highways

Car Toronto

CAA South Central Ontario has been advocating on behalf of our Members since 1903. Today, CAA counts better roads, a better environment, senior driving and safety as its core priorities.

Advocating for safer roads

CAA participated in the minister's roundtable, which formed the basis of the recently passed legislation on street racing. CAA also worked with an MPP on the introduction of legislation aiming to prohibit new drivers from using cell phones and other portable electronic devices while operating motor vehicles.

Motorists shouldn't have to pay more

Ontario motorists pay more than $7 billion annually to the provincial and federal governments in gas taxes, licensing and registration. A substantial portion of that tax revenue is directed to areas that are unrelated to transportation infrastructure. Our Members believe motorists pay more than their fair share in motoring-related taxes.

Furthermore, our Members have told us more of the motoring taxes they pay should be put back into our transportation infrastructure. We are working hard to deliver that message to government.

Success Stories

We're pleased with the 2006 infrastructure announcement made by the provincial government that $400 million will be given to municipalities for repairs to Ontario's roads and bridges.

CAA also secured a seat on the Metrolinx (GTTA) Advisory Council. This council will be making recommendations to the provincial government that concern the Greater Toronto Area's transportation infrastructure over the next twenty years.

Supporting road safety

CAA strongly supports more investment into technologies that improve road safety. One example is the synchronization of traffic lights and sensors in roads that improve mobility and safety, while reducing emissions.

Encouraging cleaner vehicles

On behalf of our members, CAA successfully lobbied the Ontario government to increase the tax rebate from $1,000 to $2,000 on the purchase of a hybrid vehicle. Furthermore, CAA has obtained numerous grants to fund educational programs for senior motorists and their families.

We will continue to work hard and represent our Members on these important issues.

Driving safely

In Canada alone, there are more than 18.5 million vehicles on the road. That averages more than one vehicle per person. Our roads are more congested than ever before. So, to help you drive safely, we've compiled the following tips on:

  • Seasonal driving
  • Small adjustments you can make
  • Driving with infants and children
