Hey guys, meet Elizabeth Blenkarn. Lizzie, as she’s known by her friends and family, is this year’s School Safety Patroller of the Year. She’s a pretty cool chick and is kind of known as a bit of a hero at her old school Millgrove Public in Millgrove. If you’re wondering where that is, it’s near Hamilton, Ontario.
She did a pretty cool thing for a kindergarten kid on their way to school on the bus last November. He was trading seats with his sister on the bus and fell and hit his head on a piece of metal. Lizzie noticed his head was bleeding from the metal cutting his head.
Guess what Lizzie did? She used her first aid training and applied pressure to the little boy’s head while the bus driver took him back to the school where he was treated by experts. Lizzie then continued with her bus patroller duties. That was some pretty quick thinking by her and that’s why her bus driver and teacher nominated her to become patroller of the year. Way to go Lizzie! You rock!
Shpend Bytyqi and Devdutt Kamath were on foot patrol duty when they stopped a grade one student from running into traffic just as a van was approaching. Their skills saved a little boy from serious injury.
Matthew Sexton and Amber Visser used the skills they learned to save their bus driver after she suffered an allergic reaction on the road.
During CAA’s summer camp, Jared Nesbitt learned how to properly use a fire extinguisher during a demonstration from the Oshawa fire department. A few months later, he used those skills to put out a fire in his own home, preventing disaster.
