RAID - Citizens Assist OPP in Catching Impaired Drivers

Whether you've heard it from friends, family members or a police officer, we have all heard the infamous don't drink and drive slogan countless number of times. And yet, even with this crucial knowledge in mind, 80,000 Canadians a year still choose to drive while impaired, consequently resulting in thousands of charges and hundreds of preventable deaths.

While several law-enforced programs aimed at the abolishment of impaired driving have proven beneficial, the OPP have taken it one step further with introduction of the RAID program, in hopes of having an even greater impact on impaired driving.

Launched in 2002, the RAID (Report All Impaired Drivers) program encourages citizens to call OPP dispatch if they believe they have spotted an impaired driver. By providing the location, direction of travel, a license plate number and other details about a suspected motorist, citizens can assist OPP in apprehending alleged impaired drivers.

Once limited to certain regions within Ontario, the RAID program was recently afforded the opportunity to expand its program through out the rest of Ontario with the help of several sponsors, including CAA Insurance.

As an association dedicated to keeping roads safe for all drivers, CAA Insurance saw the RAID program as the perfect partnership to continue the ongoing safety of all motorists. With the support of CAA Insurance, the RAID program now gives everyone the opportunity to make a phone call that could save a life and prevent further tragedies associated with impaired driving.

Everyone can play a role in keeping our roads safe and free of impaired drivers.

To report an impaired driver call 1-888-310-1122 on your cell phone or *OPP (677).

Clearly state that you are following a suspected impaired driver.
