Argentina is a country like no other in South America. Well-educated people contribute to an infrastructure that is highly developed, including a first-world highway system, economy and culture. Buenos Aires, the capital city, feels like a city transported straight from Europe with its majestic opera houses and plazas. In the west, the Andes mountains offer travellers great outdoor opportunities to hike, ski and much more. The far south offers lovers of nature and wildlife a wide assortment of adventure opportunities, while the northwestern corner of this dreamed land showcases the monumental Igassau Falls, deserts and steppes. Known to many as the Paris of the Americas, Argentina is like a miniature Europe, surrounded by all the nature South America has to offer.
Comprising almost the entire southern half of South America, Argentina is the world's eighth largest country, covering an area of 2.8 million square kilometres. Argentina possesses some of the world's tallest mountains, expansive deserts and impressive waterfalls, with the diversity of the land ranging from wild, remote areas in southern Patagonia to the bustling metropolis of Buenos Aires in the north.
Argentina is subject to a variety of climates as a result of its location in the southern hemisphere and its varied elevation. The climate is predominantly temperate with extremes ranging from subtropical in the north to sub polar in the far south. The north of the country is characterized by very hot, humid summers and mild drier winters, while central Argentina has hot summers and thunderstorms, producing some of the world's largest hail. The southern regions have warm summers and cold winters with heavy snowfall, especially in mountainous zones.
