Egypt

A country that needs no introduction, Egypt is the ultimate destination for those travellers fascinated by pyramids and ancient civilizations. From the live Nile Valley to the solitary, diverse deserts and lush oases to the exotic underwater life of the Red Sea and the beautiful Mediterranean beaches, Egypt has more sights and famous attractions than anywhere else in the world. As Herodotus wrote in 50 BC, "Now, let me talk more of Egypt for it has a lot of admirable things and what one sees there is superior to any other country."

Located at the crossroads of Africa, Asia and Europe, Egypt covers an area of over 1 million square kilometres and is bordered by Libya, Sudan and Israel. Egypt is also home to the longest river in the world, the Nile and is bounded by the Mediterranean and Red seas. The north of Egypt has impressive temples and graves from Pharonic times while Cairo, the capital city, boasts the wonders of the Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum. The south boasts such popular tourist destinations as Aswan and Luxor, the latter of which has been characterized as the world's greatest open-air museum.

Temperatures average between 27°C and 32°C in summer (up to 43°C on the Red Sea coast) and between 13°C and 21°C in winter. A steady wind from the northwest helps temper the hot temperatures in the areas near the Mediterranean. Egypt does not receive a great deal of rainfall, with averages of between 2 and 5 mm per year. Snowfall, although rare, can occur in Alexandria, but more often on the mountains of Sinai and the northern, coastal regions.
