Full of history and diversity, Massachusetts offers everything from cobblestone streets and beautiful scenery to beautiful resorts and classic seaside towns. For history buffs, Massachusetts boasts major historical centres such as Boston and Plymouth, where the Pilgrims first landed aboard the Mayflower. The Springfield Armory National Historic Site reveals one of the world's largest firearms collections while Pioneer Valley also contains a wealth of historical attractions. Minute Man National Historical Park in Concord preserves several sites that relate to the battles of the American Revolution. Other popular tourist destinations include the Berkshire Hills region in western Massachusetts, Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
Massachusetts is bordered by New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Massachusetts has been named by the World Wildlife Federation as one of the world's Top 10 whale-watching spots, with a variety of species of whales found just 40 kilometres off the coast. Whale-watching cruises operate from April to October.
Massachusetts has cold winters and moderately warm summers, with cooler temperatures in the Berkshires year-round. The coast experiences the warmest temperatures, averaging 23°C in July and only -1°C in January. Winter snowfall in and around Boston is considerable, with higher levels in the Berkshire Hills region.
