South Carolina

South Carolina

The very definition of southern charm, South Carolina is defined by its hospitality. With scenic mountains and forest habitat, beautiful beaches on the Atlantic Ocean and some of the freshest fish in the country, South Carolina is an ideal getaway destination that isn't far from home. Columbia, the capital of South Carolina, is situated in the South Carolina Heartland, while Charleston, a city preserved in time, complete with narrow, cobbled streets. Myrtle Beach is a haven for golfers, swimmers and other recreational enthusiasts, while Hilton Head Island offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy a variety of aquatic and golfing activities.

South Carolina is composed of four geographic areas. The lower part of the state is the Coastal Plain and is nearly flat and composed entirely of recent sediments such as sand, silt and clay. Areas with better drainage make excellent farmland, though some land is swampy. The coastline contains many salt marshes and estuaries, as well as natural ports such as Georgetown and Charleston.

South Carolina has a humid subtropical climate, with hot and humid summer daytime temperatures averaging between 30°C and 39°C in most of the state. Winter temperatures vary by region, with the coastal areas experiencing very mild winters and high temperatures averaging around 16°C and lows of 5°C to 8°C. Further inland, the average January overnight low is around 4°C. Precipitation is abundant the entire year, though the coastal region tends to have a slightly wetter summer and the inland region experiences the greatest precipitation in March.
