Modern Spain offers much more than bullfights, flamenco dancers and crowded beaches. This spectacular and diverse country features tremendous history, distinctive modern architecture and a uniqueness that is immediately recognizable. With rolling, green hills in the north and beautiful beaches in the south, Spain is filled with opportunities for every type of traveller. Spain is also rich in history, with Moorish palaces, crumbling castles, Roman ruins and Gothic and Renaissance cathedrals that spiral straight into the skies. In Spain, there is a perfect destination for every type of traveller.
Comparable in size to France, mainland Spain is dominated by high plateaus, beautiful mountain ranges and free-flowing rivers. Spain borders with France and Andorra in the north and Portugal to the west, though several groups of islands (the Balearic in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean and Ceuta and Melilla near north Africa) are all considered part of the Spanish territory.
Spain is extremely hot during in July and August, though a temperate climate permeates the north throughout the rest of the year. The best time to visit is during spring or autumn, except for the Atlantic coast, which has heavy rains in October and November. Spain's size and geographical location create an extremely diverse climate, though areas such as Barcelona are wonderful to visit at almost any time of year.
