In Britain, the currency is the British pound (GBP). Traveller's cheques can be exchanged at banks but are not usually accepted at retail outlets. Credit cards are widely accepted; however, since February 2006, purchases made using a debit or credit card require the entry of a Personal Identification Number (PIN). Although it is still possible to use a signature in lieu of a PIN entry, some retailers may refuse to take payment by this method because of the increased risk of fraud. Travellers should ensure they have the PINs to their credit cards.
ATMs are widely available. Canadian currency and traveller's cheques are not widely accepted worldwide. Your bank can advise if you need a new personal identification number (PIN) for overseas access to your account. Credit cards and debit cards should be used with caution due to the potential for fraud and other criminal activity. ATMs should be used during business hours inside a bank, supermarket, or large commercial building. There are no restrictions on import and export of local and foreign currencies.
