Tuscany and Umbria

Rich red earth, the perfect backdrop for olives and vines; endless azure skies; and rolling golden wheat fields just begin to describe the beauty of the "Heart of Italy." In southern Tuscany, you'll visit Montepulciano, high atop a hill and famed for its wine. Your three- night stay in the spa town of Montecatini is the ideal base for the short journey to Florence, where Michelangelo's monumental statue of David dominates the famed Academy Gallery.

See the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, explore the landmark sites of this cultural capital as you wish, and enjoy an evening cooking demonstration and dinner. In Volterra, visit one of the most famous Etruscan museums in Italy, the Guarnaci Museum; travel the spectacular Tuscan countryside to Siena, scene of the Palio, a bareback horse race through its famous piazza; and spend two nights in Perugia , your base for exploring Umbria. Your last stop before returning to Rome is the walled city of Assisi, home to the Basilica dedicated to St. Francis.
