When
you go on vacation you probably make a checklist of
everything you need to pack, but don't forget Rover.
If you're one of the 65% of pet owners who would like
to travel with your pet, here is a packing checklist
for animals:
- Carrier or crate. Make sure it is sturdy, well-ventilated
and large enough for the your pet to stand up and
turn around.
- Nylon or leather collar or harness, licence tag,
ID tags, and leash. All should be sturdy and fit properly.
- Food and healthy snacks. Bring a little more than
you think you'll need, in case you get delayed.
- Bottled water from home. Like people, many animals
are finicky about their drinking water.
- Medications, if necessary.
- Health certificates and other required documents
such as vaccination records. If you are planning to
visit a national or state park, or cross a border,
you will need to call ahead to find out exactly what
is required.
- A blanket or other bedding. If your pet is accustomed
to sleeping on the furniture, bring a blanket or sheet
to place on top of the hotel's bedding.
- Litter supplies, scooper and plastic bags for disposal.
- Favourite toys.
- Carpet deodorizer.
- Chewing preventative.
- Grooming supplies. Include a brush/comb, nail clippers,
shampoo, towels, cotton balls/swabs.
- First aid kit. Include gauze, bandages and adhesive
tape, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, muzzle,
scissors and tweezers.
- A recent photograph and written description of
each pet. This will be invaluable if your pet is separated
from you. The description should include the animal's
name, breed, gender, height, weight, colouring and
distinctive markings. The presence of identification
tattoos or chips should also be noted.
