Croatia covers a land area of 56,691 square kilometres and has a population of over 4.5 million people. It boasts an amazing 5,835 kilometres of coastline, 4,057 kilometres of which belongs to islands, cliffs and reefs. There are 1,185 islands in the Adriatic, though only about 70 are populated.
Croatia's coastal region enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and mild winters. Minimum winter temperatures are around 4°C, with summers averaging around 26°C. In the interior a continental climate dominates, with hot summers and cold winters that average around 1°C.
