Ecuador

Ecuador

A small nation on a large continent, Ecuador strives to establish itself as one of the must-see places in the Americas. The country's varied and beautiful landscape includes fertile plains, rolling hills and a variety of rivers that rush from the heights of the Andes Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. It boasts hundreds of miles of coastline featuring attractive beaches and a wide assortment of hotels and resorts for tourists. And, perhaps above all else, it is home to one of the most ecologically diverse areas in the entire world - the Galapagos Islands.

Andeas Mountains

I just returned from an exquisite photography expedition to extraordinary Ecuador to photograph hummingbirds and other exotic wildlife. The lodge where I stayed afforded me the opportunity to get up close and personal to the hummers in their natural habitat high in the Andeas mountains. I observed more than 40 different species over the course of two weeks. I had the good fortune of holding not one, not two, but three different hummingbirds in the palm of my hand during my adventure. This was positively the highlight of my trip as the energy they exude is beyond comparison with any other animal in the universe. Ecuador is a country rich with so many different bird species both with intense colour and immense diversity. I would love to go back to Ecuador and explore the Galapagos Islands which is brimming with many other species found nowhere else on the planet. I was fortunate to capture many excellent shots in the 3,000 images I took and the only difficulty I have now, is trying to decide which ones to frame and mount? What a wonderful dilemma it is indeed.

Straddling the equator in western South America, Ecuador has territories in both the northern and the southern hemispheres. The country is geographically divided into the Amazon, the Highlands, the Coast and the Galapagos Islands. Ecuador is bordered by Colombia to the north, Peru to the south and east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

Although Ecuador is not particularly large, there is great variety in the climate, largely determined by altitude. The coast is hot all year, with a humid rainy season between December and May. In the mountains, climate depends on altitude, becoming cooler the higher you go. The Amazon region is hot, humid and wet while the Galapagos Islands are dry with a steady year-round average temperature of 25°C. Ecuadorians like to say that you're likely to experience the weather of four distinct seasons during any one day, as the only thing predictable about the weather in Ecuador is its unpredictability.

Ecuador has a great climate all year round but high tourist seasons November to January and June to August do cause prices to increase.
