Maine

A land by the sea, Maine is full of fresh air, seafood and water. Eat fresh shellfish on the shore as lobster boats and schooners pass by, traverse the gorgeous coastline, studded with lighthouses and old forts. Bradbury Mountain offers active vacationers a chance to hike and take in the picturesque scenery and wonderfully fresh air. Tour Augusta, the capital city, and visit one of the oldest military forts in the United States. In spring, watch as quaint coastal villages come to life, welcoming tourists with open arms and fresh lobster tails.

Maine has the distinction of being the only state to border just one other state (New Hampshire to the west), though it does share its border with New Brunswick and Quebec. Maine's Moosehead Lake is one of the largest lakes in the New England area. Maine also has several unique geographical features, including Old Sow, the largest tidal whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere. Unbeknownst to most, Maine is also the source of an ongoing dispute between the United States and Canada, both of which claim sovereignty of Machias Seal Island and North Rock.

Maine has a continental climate, with cold winters and warm summers. Winter temperatures drop to around -4°C, while summer temperatures are frequently 30°C and up. The northern part of the state tends to be drier and colder in comparison to the southern and coastal areas, while the sea keeps the coastal temperatures moderate. As with all of the eastern seaboard states, snowfall occurs in winter and heavy snowfall is not unusual.
