Malaysia's charming history as a vital world trading port has transformed the country into a land of great multicultural diversity that all Canadians can appreciate. Malaysia is home to hundreds of colourful festivals, eclectic cultures, sandy beaches, rich mangroves and natural wonders. Yet Malaysia is also home to towering skyscrapers, five-star hotels and the Petronas Towers, one of the world's tallest buildings.
Malaysia is as geographically diverse as it is culturally. There are two parts to the country - 11 states in the peninsula of Malaysia and two states on the northern part of Borneo. Cool hideaways are found in the highlands that roll down to warm, sandy beaches and rich, humid mangroves. Malaysia borders with Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei and the Philippines, though Malaysia itself is separated into two parts by the South China Sea.
As a result of its location on the equator, the climate in Malaysia is tropical without extremely high temperatures. Days are very warm, while nights are fairly cool. The main rainy season in the east runs between November and February, while August is the wettest period on the west coast. However, the prevailing monsoon winds dictate rainfall throughout the country, causing differences on the eastern and western coasts. Daytime temperatures in areas such as Kuala Lumpur average around 27°C year-round.
