Social Responsibility - Market Place

Environmentally Focused Retail Store Products

The plan:

CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) will continue to source and utilize environmentally-responsible manufactured goods for all of its retail locations.

What we’ve achieved:

In 2012, CAA SCO continued to sell BPA-free Vapur reusable water bottles, stainless steel water bottles and Tilley Hats. These select vendors donate part of the proceeds of their sales to their charities of choice, including the Audubon Society, Street Kids International and the PacSafe Turtle Fund.

TripTik® Travel Planner

The plan:

The electronic TripTik® Travel Planner makes travel easier for CAA Members and cuts down on manufactured paper products.

What we’ve achieved:

  • The popularity of online TripTik® as well as our new travel app grew substantially.
  • CAA Stores offer Members the choice of a TripTik® Planner (TTP) in lieu of classic TripTik®.
  • This service is now available in all 34 CAA Stores.

Winter Tire Discount

The plan:

To encourage their use, CAA Insurance offers a discount on your CAA Auto Insurance premium if your vehicle has four properly installed winter tires.

What we’ve achieved:

To date, 11,417 Members have taken advantage of the Winter Tire Discount which recognizes safe winter driving practices.

Roadside Assistance Network Training Standards

The plan:

By introducing standardization, consistent safety equipment requirements and safety protocols for our service providers, we aimed to increase the overall quality of service our Associates deliver when providing roadside service to Members.

What we’ve achieved:

  • CAA SCO trained 202 students in Towing, Recovery and Safety in 2012. This brought the total number of drivers trained in Towing and Recovery to 956.
  • Another 166 students went through Customer Service training, bringing that total to 397 since that training was implemented in 2011.
  • 100 drivers came to the revised Lock Out training sessions in 2012.
  • Towing & Recovery Level two will be rolled out for 2013, reinforcing Scene Management and the importance of safety in the towing industry.

CAA Bike Assist

The plan:

To strengthen CAA SCO's commitment to the environment, we continue to offer and expand our Roadside Assistance for cyclists.

What we’ve achieved:

Use of Bike Assist continued in 2012. A total of 91 calls were fielded by CAA to help cycling Members.

Green Power Battery

The plan:

Made with recycled lead and recycled plastics, the Green Power Battery helps to keep millions of pounds of harmful lead, acid and plastics out of landfills and waterways. CAA’s goal is to encourage motorists to adopt these batteries to help lower their environmental impact.

What we’ve achieved:

As of 2012, 44,393 Members were using Green Power batteries and reducing their environmental footprint.

Increased cycling initiatives

The plan:

To help build awareness around cycling tourism, safety and eco-tourism.

What we’ve achieved:

CAA supported 200 riders throughout the Great Waterfront Trail Adventure (GWTA), an eight-day ride (740 km) with Bike Assist and Mobile Bike Shop supporting the riders along the way.

Electronic Documentation

The plan:

To continue sending insurance documents electronically to provide an environmentally friendly distribution option for insurance materials.

What we’ve achieved:

We have continued to distribute our insurance materials electronically. This provides real benefit to insureds who can easily carry all relevant material on their smart phone for access if required.

Safety-Kleen Engine Oil

The plan:

To encourage the use of Safety-Kleen’s Eco-Power, a recycled and re-refined engine oil.

What we’ve achieved:

Based on the amount sold, use of this re-refined engine oil prevented 3,500 metric tonnes of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere (equaling nearly 1,473,002 litres of gasoline saved).

Hybrid Discount

The plan:

To encourage the use of hybrid vehicles, CAA Insurance offers a discount to policy holders who insure one with CAA SCO.

What we’ve achieved:

As of December 2012, CAA Insurance had 478 Hybrid vehicle policies in place where Members were taking advantage of the discount policy.

Printing Optimization

The plan:

To introduce smarter, environmentally-sound printers that help reduce the amount of paper and ink used in printing.

What we’ve achieved:

  • All of the printers at our head offices at 60 and 100 Commerce Valley Drive, Stoney Creek and 34 retail locations have been replaced with new HP printers. The new printers will help CAA SCO on their way to becoming an all-around more energy efficient organization.
  • The implementation of secure printing (a process that keeps documents off of the printer tray and confidential until a user is ready to collect them) has been completed in the first quarter of 2013.
  • The replacement of the printers is expected to help reduce paper and ink usage throughout the company.
