With borders reopened around the globe, a world of opportunities is ready for eager travellers. In June, the number of Canadians returning by air from abroad through kiosk-equipped airports was over 15 times greater than in 2021, reports Statistics Canada.

If you plan to take a trip this summer, ensure you and your loved ones are prepared and your trip is protected with these ten travel tips.

Itinerary changes

There may be sudden scheduling changes for your flights. Sign up for notifications from your airline so you’ll receive updates about your trip to your mobile device.

If you’re taking a connecting flight, aim to book extra time between flights.

Longer wait times

Be patient when travelling as processes like customs, boarding and baggage claim may take longer.

CAA recommends arriving at the airport at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours prior to an international departure.

Checked baggage

Luggage can cause delays. Sometimes your baggage may not arrive with you or takes extra time to be unloaded.

If possible, pack light and opt to bring only a carry-on. Ensure it fits the size requirements for all the airlines you’re travelling with. Visit a CAA Store for a selection of luggage and packing accessories to meet your needs.

Follow the 3-1-1 rule when packing your carry-on—only three ounces of liquid, gel, aerosol, cream or paste that can fit in one resealable bag are permitted.

Proper documentation

Ensure your passport will be valid for six months after your planned return date.

Passport renewals may also take longer than usual due to high demand, so it's a good idea to update yours a few months before your trip. CAA Members enjoy special pricing on passport photos at CAA Stores.

Print all tickets, boarding passes, visas and travel insurance information, including your policy number.

Look at what’s required

Check the requirements of each destination you’ll be visiting. Make sure you fully understand what information you’ll need at every destination, such as proof of Covid-19 vaccination, and whether it should be printed or submitted online.

Understand the risk level of each location prior to booking. Check the Government of Canada Travel Advice and Advisories website for more information.

Stay connected

It’s important to have access to trusted, up-to-date information while travelling.

Bookmark the Global Affairs Canada website before your departure and check it regularly while abroad.

Also sign up for Registration of Canadians Abroad and keep in touch with a family member or friend throughout your vacation.

Booking car rentals

There is increased demand for, as well as a shortage of, rental vehicles. Some agencies also don’t allow for pick up in one city and drop off in another.

Speak with a CAA Travel expert for help booking a car in advance of your trip to avoid disappointment.

Protect your trip

Ensure you, your loved ones and your trip are covered while away with travel insurance.

Medical emergencies, trip cancellation or interruption, lost luggage as well as expenses for replacing lost or stolen personal documents, like your driver’s licence, may be covered under your plan.

Speak with a CAA Travel Insurance expert to go over your options.

Confirm cancellation policies

Many airlines and hotels are flexible on refunds and booking changes.

Review any key dates related to your cancellation policy and find out whether you’re entitled to a refund, future travel voucher or credit when booking your trip.
