As some of us are continuing to work from home, a new type of travel has emerged: the “workcation.” Here are five tips on how you can keep up with work and still enjoy your vacation.

Consider the time

If you need to be available during office hours, choose a destination in a time zone close to your own at home. That way, you won’t have to worry about very early meetings or late night emails.

If you’re an early riser or a night owl, take advantage of the opportunity to pick a time zone that best fits your routine.

Research internet speeds

Don’t wait until your first meeting to find out that the internet quality at your destination is bad. Look for places that have fast and reliable internet.

Once you’ve found a hotel or resort you like, before booking ask about the Wi-Fi connection and internet speed, and if services like video conferencing are supported.

Check regional rules

Every country has different rules for how long visitors can stay. Since the pandemic, many destinations have extended work-visa programs, which makes it easier for remote workers to stay longer.

Barbados, for example, offers a 12 Month Welcome Stamp visa open to individuals and families working and studying abroad. Some locations may have additional requirements to stay, such as proof of employment and salary.

Stick to a schedule

With remote work, you don’t have colleagues stopping by your desk for a chat or the boss checking up on you, so it’s easy to get distracted—particularly if you are surrounded by a beautiful landscape like a tropical beach or bustling activity outside your hotel window.

Avoid this by creating a schedule and sticking to it. That way, you are accountable for your time and available to your coworkers when they may need you.

Factor in time for fun

You may have the best intentions to keep your head down and finish your to-do list everyday. But, of course, you’ll be tempted to explore your new surroundings.

Make sure that you schedule in time for both work and play during a workcation. Give yourself days off to be a tourist and just relax. You’ll have better focus when it’s time to go back to work.
