What You Need to Know About Travel This Year

As pandemic restrictions relax, many people are eager to travel again. Here’s what you need to know to remain safe and informed while travelling.

A person wearing a white T-shirt and red pants with a white mask is standing in front of the Departures entrance to an airport. They are wearing a black backpack and holding onto the handle of a red suitcase with one hand.

As Covid-19 restrictions begin to ease, more and more Canadians are thinking about travel. Before you head to your destination, here are six tips for safe travelling in 2023.

Do your research

Find out about your destination’s Covid-19 situation before booking, says Alexandra Niester, assistant vice president of insurance marketing for CAA Club Group.

Ensure you understand the risk level associated with travel to your destination, too, by checking the Government of Canada Travel Advice and Advisories website.

Many places may have quarantine requirements still in place, Niester says. “You should also understand what happens if you test positive for Covid-19 in the country you are visiting,” she adds.

Know your coverage

Look up what medical coverage is included with your travel insurance in case you get sick for any reason while you’re away.

Regardless of your insurance coverage, there may not be space or care available at local hospitals and clinics due to Covid-19.

Also, you may not be able to recover or quarantine in your planned accommodations. You may have to cover the cost of your stay at a designated location.

Read the fine print

Before you book your trip, make sure you understand any change and cancellation policies your airline and service providers might have.

Prior to departure, reconfirm your travel and cancellation information. “What was true when a trip was booked may not be the case when it’s time to travel,” Niester says.

It’s a good idea to double-check your research with the appropriate embassy or consulate, too. “Travel at this time is complex,” she says, “so ensuring you have the most up-to-date and accurate information is essential.”

Purchase travel insurance

Ensure you have adequate coverage for any medical emergencies and illnesses related to Covid-19 are included.

Some Covid-19 travel insurance coverage options may be insufficient and travellers may have to absorb any additional expenses up front.

“Due to the continuously changing circumstances,” Niester says, “it’s also recommended to purchase trip cancellation and interruption insurance.”

Stay informed

Niester suggests checking the Global Affairs Canada website for trusted, timely information while travelling.

And sign up for Registration of Canadians Abroad, a free service that allows the Government of Canada to notify you in case of an emergency in another country.

“It’s important that Canadians understand the ongoing uncertainty associated with international travel,” she says.
