Do You Need to Get More Sleep?
Take this quick quiz to find out if you’re getting all the zzz’s you need
Skimping on your seven to nine hours of sleep can derail your day and lead to long-term health problems. “We tend to find other things to do, like catching up on our favourite shows or checking social media when we should be prioritizing sleep,” says Corissa Feenstra, a certified sleep consultant in Fort St. John, B.C.
Answer the following questions to see if you’re getting enough sleep.
0–37% Time to make some changes
It’s important to check in with your doctor if you have chronic sleep problems. To help with persistent sleep troubles, Feenstra recommends regular exercise as well as sunshine. “Getting out during the day can be extremely beneficial in regulating your sleep/wake cycle,” Feenstra says. “Exposure to the intense blue light from the sun, especially early in the morning, helps reset your circadian rhythm.”
38–69% You could use a bit more rest
“Turning down the lights and, more importantly, turning off your devices an hour before bedtime is a great way to get your body and brain ready for bed,” Feenstra says. “It helps cue your melatonin [sleep hormone] production and signals to your body that it’s time for sleep.”
70–100% You’re well-rested and ready for anything
Thanks to plenty of good-quality sleep, your energy levels are the envy of your office. “If you sleep solidly during the night and wake up feeling great, then you’re probably getting a good, restful night’s sleep,” Feenstra says.
