Tap into the power of CAA's membership

CAA has been advocating on behalf of our Members since 1903. The Government Relations team represents the interests of CAA Members to municipal and provincial governments, community groups and stakeholders by building relationships, making deputations and/or written submissions to councils and ministerial offices. We aim to ensure the voice of CAA members is heard by government, while keeping Members informed about the issues that affect them.

Current Issues

Slow Down, Move Over

CAA has long advocated for the protection of motorists and roadside assistance workers through Slow Down, Move Over legislation.

CAA supported a private member’s bill, introduced by Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop in both 2011 and 2012. Mr. Dunlop’s bill called for amending the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) to extend Slow Down, Move Over provisions in the HTA to roadside assistance vehicles.

Ontario’s Worst Roads

CAA is calling on all road users – motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and others – throughout the province to raise awareness about the need for improved infrastructure by voting for Ontario’s worst road. With approximately 2,000 nominations each year, the CAA Worst Roads campaign is an opportunity to help improve road conditions in communities across the province.

"The Big Move"

Later this year, Metrolinx will release a report outlining how to pay for its 25-year, $50 billion plan to expand the transportation network in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). This report will provide recommendations to the provincial government regarding potential revenue sources. CAA has created an infograph to give consumers a better idea of what each revenue tool may cost you.

Government Submissions

We have taken opportunities to submit reports, recommendations or resolutions to support the issues CAA stands for. Here is what we've recently submitted:

HST Petition and Resolution
The HST e-petition has allowed individual members of the public to show their support in asking the Government of Ontario for a portion of the HST collected on gas and diesel to be dedicated to transportation, such as roads and public transit.

Municipalities have also been given an opportunity to show their collective support by passing a resolution authored by CAA and the Ontario Good Roads Association. By passing the resolution, municipal governments state that their municipality request the Government of Ontario consider dedicating a portion of the revenue derived from HST charged on gasoline and diesel sales to a new predictable funding mechanism that will allow Ontario's municipalities to make the critical investments needed to be effective stewards of transportation infrastructure. Making the Case for Transportation Infrastructure Funding
The Government of Ontario has a pre-budget consultation process that allows for both verbal and written submissions. CAA put forth the proposal to have a portion of the HST on gasoline and diesel dedicated to transportation infrastructure funding. We represented the issue verbally at consultations before the Minister of Finance and followed with a written submission to the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs as part of the 2011 pre-budget consultation. Download pdf »
