Social Responsibility - Environment

Operational Improvement

The plan:

CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) will produce less waste in its day-to-day operations, instilling confidence in our Employees and Members that what we do operationally is mindful of reducing our impact on the environment.

What we’ve achieved:

  • In late 2012, CAA SCO reduced the price of its reusable enviro-bags to help achieve a greater, more positive corporate impact on the environment.
  • By the close of 2012, 11,268 Members opted to receive their copy of CAA Magazine electronically.
  • As of July 2012, CAA moved to produce all marketing materials exclusively on paper with some post-consumer waste (PCW) content. For the period July 1 to December 31, by using combined paper, CAA SCO has helped save the equivalent of 375 trees worth of paper.

CAA Nissan Leaf (Electric Vehicle)

The plan:

Whatever type of vehicle our Members may drive, we want to provide peace of mind, trust and share successes around new vehicle technologies. We also want to continue to increase our knowledge around servicing this new technology.

What we’ve achieved:

  • CAA now owns a new, fully-electric Nissan Leaf, along with a dual-wand, Level II charging station at head office. The charging station is free to the public to encourage the use of electric vehicles.
  • The acquisition of the CAA Autogreen Nissan Leaf demonstrates our continued commitment to the environment and to sharing our experiences with Members about new vehicle technology.

CAA Autogreen

The plan:

CAA SCO's Autogreen program is designed to provide Members with eco-conscious options that have positive, measurable and meaningful consequences for the environment.

What we’ve achieved:

  • RecycleDrive continued to grow in 2012, with 19 CAA Approved Auto Repair Service locations participating in the collection of 1,253 tires, 127 automotive batteries and 2,563 litres of oil.
  • The Clean Air Commute saved 710 kg of pollutants from entering the air (equivalent to 5,945 Clean Air Kilometres).

Tree Planting

The plan:

CAA’s tree planting initiative aims to help replenish Earth’s natural resources.

What we’ve achieved:

  • Tree planting events were held throughout the South Central Ontario region in the spring.
  • Each time a CAA SCO Member participates in the Autogreen program, CAA SCO plants a tree and will take care of it for five years in partnership with Trees Ontario.
  • Since 2009, CAA SCO has planted just over 24,000 trees, which equals a carbon offset of over 9,000,000 lb (over the lifetime of those trees).

Canadian International AutoShow – Eco-Drive Showcase Sponsorship

The plan:

By sponsoring the Eco-Drive Showcase, CAA aimed to promote more environmentally-friendly transportation options.

What we’ve achieved:

  • For the second year in a row, CAA was the title sponsor of the Eco-Drive Showcase.
  • CAA had a fully branded presence throughout the Eco-Drive area at the Canadian International AutoShow, which included a dedicated space built to engage visitors with information regarding eco-driving options and solutions.
