For most Ontarians, the end of daylight time means we get to ‘fall back’ and enjoy an extra hour of sleep. But it’s also a great time of year to scratch some important household and vehicle tasks off your list.

As you set the clock back, why not add these three essential tasks to your yearly ritual of switching back to standard time.

1. Test and replace batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

We sometimes just assume that our homes’ electrical safety equipment will work when we need it to, but it’s important to test and replace batteries in detectors. It’s also good practice to check that everything is in working order. And, if any equipment is near the manufacturer’s recommended replacement age, consider investing in new detectors.

2. Restock or prepare an emergency supply kit for your home and vehicle.

In the unlikely event that you need to evacuate your home at a moment’s notice, you’ll be glad you prepared emergency kits so you and your family have the essentials for at least 72 hours.

3. Review and update your insurance coverage and home inventory list.

Your home and your personal belongings are meaningful and valuable assets. That’s why checking your policy to ensure your existing coverage meets your current needs and updating your contents will help prove the value of what you own, should you ever need to file a claim. It’s also a great idea to keep important records and electronic copies on USB flash drives in a safe place, like a waterproof and fireproof lock box.

Make your switch over to standard time run like clockwork.  Add these three simple to-dos to your annual list before you turn your clocks back.
