Five Ways to Transform Your Backyard into a Low-maintenance Garden

Most of us have been there before: we’ve felt completely overwhelmed by maintaining our backyards. Here are some ways to lighten your workload so you can spend more time doing the things you want this summer.

1. Stop worrying about your lawn.

Detest mowing? You could spend a lot of money and replace your lawn with hardscaping – expensive stone pathways and terraces, for example – or you could keep it simple and hire a lawn service to do the work for you. Yardly will mow your lawn for you and do important services like aeration and fertilization that improve the health of your lawn over time. CAA Members SAVE 10%* on regular-priced weekly or bi-weekly lawn mowing.

2. Install sprinklers.

In the summer heat, keeping up with watering can become overwhelming – especially in periods of drought and on expanses of sun-exposed property. Instead of hauling the hose in and out three times a week, install an automatic sprinkler or irrigation system that’s timed to your outdoor water system. Simply set it and forget it.

3. Enlist in-house help.

Involve your kids with garden chores that suit their age level, from watering to weeding. Give them ownership of a certain section of your yard and buy them a few of their own basic garden tools like a weeding trowel, watering can and garden gloves. We’ve made it easy to find the right tools with our list of essential garden tools.

4. More containers, less garden beds.

If you love flowers, but don’t want to deal with garden beds that need regular weeding, think about creating your flower “garden” with containers. We love container gardens for so many reasons, including the fact that, in addition to flowers, you can plant pots with easy-to-grow vegetables and herbs. You can find stylish pots for your container garden at Well.ca, where CAA Members can earn up to 5%* back in CAA Dollars® when you shop online.

5. Hire seasonal help to look after the rest of it.

In addition to lawn mowing, Yardly can help you with other tasks you dread or don’t have time for. They’ll do a fall clean up in your garden, shovel your snow in winter and set you up for success with a spring clean-up the following year. CAA Members save 10%* on regular-priced weekly or bi-weekly lawn mowing or snow shoveling services provided by Yardly.

New tools can also make things easier.
