Canadians are looking to plug-in rather than pump fuel into their new vehicles. With the growing interest in electric cars, here are five EV trends you can expect this year.

You have more choices

Canadians will have more than 60 new 2022 electric models to choose from, with some priced below $50,000.

In the past, EV options were low-range but affordable compacts, like the Nissan Leaf and Mini Cooper SE, or expensive, high-range luxury vehicles, like the Tesla Model S and Porsche Taycan.

In 2022, electric vehicles are available in more styles and markets.

Automakers like Ford are introducing electric pickup trucks like the 2022 F-150 Lightning EV. And they won’t be the only player, with upstart Rivian marketing its R1T truck this year, too.

There are also more affordable, family-friendly offerings such as the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5, 2022 Nissan Ariya and 2022 Polestar 2.

More choices makes the EV market feel more fleshed out and approachable than ever before.

Increased range

The average maximum range of EVs has increased by about 10 percent to 446 km.

Considering the average one-way commute to work for Canadians is 57 km, longer-range electric vehicles will help ease range anxiety and eliminate frantic searches for a plug.

Rapid charging

New EVs charge quicker. Some vehicles can give you 100 km of range in just five minutes.

Using a level 3 DC Fast Charging station, models that support 150 kW or higher rates allow for a quick recharge.

More public charging stations

There are roughly 15,000 public or semi-private chargers available across the country, with an additional 2,000 under construction. Natural Resources Canada aims to double that figure in the next three years to ensure EV drivers won’t be left stranded.

With improved performance, greater access to charging stations and more makes and models on the market, making the switch to an electric vehicle is becoming an easier option for many drivers.
