Where can you experience a slice of Canadian history by land, air and water, indulge in fine dining, microbrewery and café fare as well as shop in one-of-a-kind boutiques—only a three-hour drive from Toronto? Kingston and the Thousand Islands region in stunning southeastern Ontario, where there’s something for everyone.

Take in a lot of what the area has to offer on a weekend or linger longer and find more fresh things to do. Read on for a sampling.

Views to enjoy on foot, by car, air or boat

There’s no such thing as a bad walk in the heart of old Kingston, which dates back to the 1700s.

A stroll near the waterfront quickly reveals why this place was once known as the “limestone city”—the elegant facades of the abundant 19th century homes still stand today, not to mention the stunning, neoclassic city hall.

Not in the mood for walking? Take a leisurely drive through the city with Kingston Trolley Tours. The charming remakes of antique trolleys allow you to take in top sights and explore the history behind them. Remember to wave as you pass by curious onlookers!

To rise above the crowd, literally, head to nearby Gananoque to board a 1000 Islands Helicopter Tour. Take in spectacular views of the more than 1,800 islands across the region while learning about key landmarks, such as Boldt Castle, and the names of the well-to-dos who summered there.

Water lovers will appreciate whizzing around the St. Lawrence River on a vintage Gar Wood Streamliner, guided by a host from the Thousand Islands Boat Museum in Gananoque. And while you're there, don't miss the hands-on experience at the museum itself, where antique boats are showcased on the docks as live exhibits.

Cafés and restaurants to treat your tastebuds

Bring your appetite. There's no shortage of culinary choices in Kingston’s vibrant downtown.

The Everly Restaurant & Lounge, for example, offers fine dining without the attitude. Its rotating, locally sourced menu is complemented by a wine list curated from local and international vineyards.

Further afield in Gananoque, indulge in rustic Italian fare at Riva restaurant on a garden patio or in the fine dining room by the fireplace.

Or for sweet and savoury treats with no additives or preservatives, visit Panache Bakery and Cafe.

But why choose just one? Take in many delicious venues with Kingston Food Tours. A lip-smacking walking tour blends tastings at top local restaurants with an insider’s perspective of Kington’s history and culture. Much like the area itself, this is a treat for all your senses.
