Home renovation can be a big job, even if you’re handy. But by taking the time to work through decisions carefully, you can save money that can be put to good use in other ways. Here are four things that can help cut costs when renovating your space.

Don’t fear DIY

While you should leave plumbing, heating and electrical to the professionals, there’s no reason you can’t roll up your sleeves and do some work.

Watch a how-to video on tile grouting for example and try it yourself. Or a wallpaper tutorial for novice decorators. The results of your hard work are often more satisfying, too.

Tiling a shower yourself saves on labour costs, so you can afford to buy a nicer tile.

You may not have the know-how to build a full staircase, but you can stain the treads and risers yourself or custom-design and install the railings.

Or, if you splurge on hardwood-floor installation, you can then save by installing vinyl flooring in the basement yourself.

Try to upcycle

Revive and restore items you already have.

Reupholster older sofas or chairs, recover dining room chair cushions, paint kitchen cupboards and swap out door handles for an instant refresh.

An old chest of drawers can be converted into a toy box for the kids, a kitchen island or a patio bar.

A dining room cabinet might make the perfect front-porch lock box for package deliveries.

And there’s no need to throw out a perfectly good lamp—just buy a new shade.

Look for sales

It pays to shop around as prices tend to fluctuate a lot on home reno materials. Take advantage of sales and buy multiples of things you’ll need when the price is right.

Save on delivery fees by keeping an item-specific shopping list and consider all your materials carefully.

Poplar baseboards are just as pretty as their more expensive maple counterparts. Economical sisal or jute on the floor might be just as nice as a wool carpet.

By saving here and there, you’ll have the money you need to buy that new refrigerator or install the fireplace you love.

Ask for help

You’re not alone. Discuss projects and suppliers with friends, neighbours and relatives who may have similar experience.

Home building and supply store staff are also a great resource. They will often provide tips and let you know what to avoid.

And if you find yourself in over your head, find a reliable contractor to help finish the project. Safety should always be a primary concern when craftsmanship is essential. As they say, measure twice and cut once.

Update your policy

Ensure your home is protected and has the proper coverage with your new renovation or house addition by speaking with a licensed CAA Insurance Agent. They can help you update your insurance policy to fit your family’s growing needs. Visit CAA Home Insurance for more information.
