CAA School Safety Patrol®

For over 85 years, CAA has been keeping children safe in Ontario.

Learn more about what we do and how you can help.

When children in our communities travel to and from school each day, we know they'll be safer thanks to the more than 20,000 CAA School Safety Patrollers on duty across the province!

Since 1929, the CAA School Safety Patrol program has run in partnership with police services, school boards, teachers, bus consortiums and student volunteers. The program was developed to protect and educate elementary school children on safe road-crossing practices.

Today, with more traffic in our school zones than ever before, CAA School Safety Patrollers, at more than 800 Ontario schools, volunteer over 3.45 million hours every year to help their classmates get to and from school safely. Since the program's inception, there have been more than 80 documented cases of Patrollers saving others from serious injury.

Watch to the video to find out how we train students for the School Safety Patrol program.

School Safety Patroller Duties.

Bus Patrollers:
  • Set a proper example and educate their classmates on how to ride the school bus
  • Are trained to assist students in getting on and off the bus using safety procedures
  • Help bus drivers with emergency exit evacuations
Foot Patrollers:
  • Are responsible for monitoring road and driveway crossings and designated student pick-up and drop-off areas
  • Help prevent any collisions between cars and pedestrians
  • Follow safe street crossing rules and set a proper example

It's important to remember that Foot Patrollers do not stop or direct traffic; rather, they act as role models and help their fellow students stay safe.

School Safety Patrol Alumni.

Our School Safety Patrol Alumni fondly remember their experiences as Patrollers when they were younger. Participating in the program allows students to receive life-saving skills training and exclusive opportunities to attend special events and meet new people. These experiences stand out and can last a lifetime – just ask the Alumni! Check out some incredible stories from Alumni Patrollers.
