With plenty of balmy nights on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to take in a movie under the stars. And luckily for movie buffs in the GTA, there’s an open-air set-up for every taste, whether you prefer an artsy solo viewing or heading out with the whole family in tow. Here are five great spots to enjoy an outdoor movie in and around Toronto this summer.

Join Torontonians for a pop-up outdoor movie in the park

Throughout the summer, Toronto Outdoor Picture Show (TOPS), a local not-for-profit, will set up screenings of cult movies, classic films and under-the-radar flicks in green spaces across the city. Building off the success of their popular Christie Pits Film Festival, a buzzy summer series that launched in 2011, TOPS’s programs are free and shown in accessible venues. Movies start at sundown.

Gather the troops for a family-friendly showing in Mississauga

Movie Nights at Celebration Square are produced by the city of Mississauga, and are designed for groups of family and friends. On Thursday nights until the end of August, enjoy free screenings of kid-friendly blockbusters and go-to favourites, from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to Mrs. Doubtfire. Patrons should aim to arrive at 7:30 p.m. to get the full experience.

Catch a new-release summer movie at a retro drive-in north of Toronto

The Stardust Drive-In Theatre, open seven days a week in Sharon, Ont., through the summer season, is a throwback in the best way. One ticket admits you to two movies—though you’re welcome to head home after the first screening or only catch the second act. Prefer to sit outside your car? No problem. Set up a lawn chair and enjoy the show.

Experience Sugar Beach’s famous floating screen

Make a point of checking out the Sail-In Cinema on August 10 or 11. Hosted by Ports Toronto, this free event sees Sugar Beach turned into the city’s largest outdoor theatre, with a double-sided screen floating on a barge in the harbour. Seating (and docking) is on a first-come, first-served basis, and screenings start around 7:30 p.m.

Spread out your blanket on a North York football field

Set on the football field and running track at Downsview Park, the popular Friday Night Lights program of movie screenings runs until September 7. Films on the schedule include feel-good hits like Coco and Jumanji, and showings start at dusk—though moviegoers are encouraged to get to the park early for the chance to win a raffle prize.
