The Travel Insurance Coverage You Need for Your Winter Vacation in Canada

Whichever Canadian destinations you visit this winter, CAA's Canada Plan has the coverage you need

Do you have plans to travel within Canada this winter? A lot can change from the time you book to when you’re packing your bags. While most Canadians understand the importance of travel insurance for trips abroad, it’s also important to make sure you’re covered when travelling in Canada—and even within Ontario.

OHIP won’t cover everything

Even though your Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) provides some coverage in other provinces, it doesn’t cover all the emergency medical expenses you could incur. You may need to pay out-of-pocket for things like ambulance service or fees charged by private hospitals or facilities.

The Canada Plan is added protection

CAA's Canada Plan provides emergency medical insurance for travel outside of Ontario, but within Canada. There is up to $5 million in coverage1 for hospital stays, ambulance services, emergency dental expenses and unexpected illness or injury.

Canada Plan policyholders also have access to virtual emergency medical assistance2—phone or video consultations with licensed physicians. If you’re at a remote cottage, for example, this can help you avoid a long drive and potentially lengthy wait time—to a medical facility or hospital, while reducing exposure to other infections. You can even get assistance obtaining prescriptions for minor ailments.

Covid-19 Coverage

Since there is no Global Affairs Canada travel advisory related to Covid-19 for Ontarians travelling within Canada, all of CAA’s emergency medical plans, including the Canada Plan, can cover you should you require any medical assistance related to Covid-19.

Safeguard your trip with trip cancellation and interruption insurance

In these uncertain times, it helps to safeguard your travel investment with CAA’s trip cancellation and interruption insurance. Trip cancellation insurance covers the prepaid, non-refundable portion of your trip if you must cancel for a specified reason, such as becoming sick on the morning of your departure or the sudden loss of a family member.

Trip interruption insurance covers unexpected occurrences while you’re already on your trip—like if you need to get home due to an emergency or if you miss your departure or connection due to weather.

Also included with CAA’s trip cancellation and interruption insurance is the “Cancel for Any Reason” benefit. That means, when you purchase a trip cancellation and interruption insurance policy within 72 hours of booking your trip, you’ll get a refund up to 50 percent for any prepaid, non-refundable charges when you need to cancel, regardless of the reason. Better yet, if you booked your trip with CAA Travel, you’ll get back up to 75 percent. Likewise, shared accommodation coverage can help you get back the non-refundable portion of a fully prepaid stay booked through an approved online platform, such as Airbnb, VRBO or Tripadvisor Rentals.
