The British Isles

British Isles

The islands known as The British Isles are visited by millions of people each year, many returning time and again. It is steeped in history and offers stunning landscapes. Perhaps the best thing about the British Isles is its compactness. You can visit many places in a relatively short period of time. The most fascinating part of visiting is travelling the back roads and coming across places not regularly visited by Tourists.

The term British Isles defines a purely geographic area - not, as is sometimes thought, a political area. It includes the sovereign states of The United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. There are more than 6,000 islands in the group, with the largest two being Great Britain (216,777 km2) and Ireland (84,406 km2).

The British Isles have a very temperate marine climate with warm and wet winters and mild and wet summers. The Gulf Stream (which flows from the Gulf of Mexico) brings with it significant moisture and also explains the temperate climate in the region.
